The Nickel & Penny
A little bit of mindreading!
The Effect: A nickel and penny are given to the volunteer to hold. You turn your back and he mixes the two coins, ending with one in each hand.
Through a few arithmetic questions, you divine which coin is in which hand.
This is very easy to do!
The Nickel & Penny (The Secret)
What you need:
A nickel and a penny.
To Perform: Tell your helper to place one of each coin in each hand. Make sure you make it obvious that you don't see where the coins go. (Turn your back, if you must.)
Tell the helper to multiply the value of the coin in the left hand by two. (This is, you tell him, to focus on the value of the coin in his mind.)
After but a second, ask him if he has the answer. Note here how long it takes for him to answer "yes".
Say something about not getting his thoughts yet and to now multiply the coin in the right hand by 13. Note how long it takes this time.
Because of the pauses (while they think of their answers), you now can divine which coin is in which hand!
If the nickel is in the right hand, you'll know this because it takes a longer time to multiply 5 times 13 (than if the penny was in the right hand, as that calculation, 1 times 13 is simple)!
If the nickel is in the left hand, you'll know that because both pauses for the calculation will be very short (2 times 5 and 1 times 13).
Easy, huh?
